Exercise Physiology

Exercise Physiology involves provision of clinical exercise interventions for persons at high-risk of developing, or with existing chronic and complex medical conditions and injuries. These interventions are provided by exercise prescription and delivery including health and physical activity education, advice and lifestyle modification.

Exercise prescription involves the use of various exercise modes including aerobic, anaerobic, endurance, strength, flexibility, neuromuscular and functional performance. Pilates is one form of the exercise spectrum involving emphasis on core strength and flexibility.

During the initial assessment Annie will obtain information from both physical examination and laboratory data. This information will then provide the basis for an exercise prescription. Patients may have options of receiving a home based program or ongoing support in the clinic.

Exercise Physiologists (EPs) work with a range of populations, including:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes
  • Osteoporosis
  • Depression
  • Cancer
  • Arthritis
  • Respiratory disease
  • Chronic pain
  • Obesity
  • History of poor exercise maintenance

EPs must be accredited by Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) as an ‘Accredited Exercise Physiologist’ to be eligible to provide services under the Medicare chronic disease management items. Rebates are also provided by private health insurers.
